Aimhigher Sport Science Summer School
An extremely successful Year 10 sport science Summer School, funded by Aimhigher London South, was hosted by Kingston University on 6th 7th and 8th April.
The aim of the three day event was to introduce vocational students to the idea of progressing from GCSE, through BTEC on to a degree level course in the area of Sport.
Thirty students from seven London South schools took part:

Christ's School Carshalton Boys Sports College Bishopsford School Chessington Community College Southborough High School Glenthorne High School Day 1
Amongst a range of workshops, they discovered what subjects they would need at GCSE to be considered for a sports course at university.There was a also a chance to see the facilities, with guided tours round Kingston University and Kingston College and an opportunity to ask Student Ambassadors what life is 'really' like as a sports student.
Day 2
On the second day, St Mary’s University College were hosts as they were introduced to three first class sports coaches and had a challenging afternoon of sports contests; from competitive first past the post races to games of softball, netball and Bulldog!
One of the highlights of the event was a tour of Twickenham Rugby Stadium. Students got to see the Nike VIP suite, member’s areas and the Board Room.They sat in the Royal Box and visited the world famous Rugby Museum.
Day 3
On the final day, Bean Chapman, a marketing executive from Virgin gave a talk on the various routes into Sports marketing. He also awarded prizes to those students who had performed well, shown particular interest and been pro-active during the three day event at the closing awards ceremony.
'I really liked the sports facilities'
Southborough student, Sonny, said that he now understood how calories were converted into energy adding the biggest attraction of university was the sports facilities. Becky from Christ’s School enjoyed doing the practical sessions best. She now intends to do Sports Science at St Mary’s University College.
